“Beauties and Beasts” are the main theme of this current series of dreamlike oil paintings. Using vibrant colors, flowing lines and forms, I depict surreal, fanciful, sometimes macabre or erotic interactions between exotic women and fantasy creatures. Objects of feminine folly, i.e. shoes, hairdo’s and outlandish outfits play heavily in most scenes. Each piece highlights a deep love of nature, of life and it’s drama, through my feminine perspective. Whether it is tranquil or darkly emotional, each painting strives to create a departure from the mundane.
Sometimes I will work from a sketch but on many occasions my image is “pulled” directly from the canvas. After many applications of a burnt umber underpainting are repeatedly wiped away with a rag and reapplied in a free form fashion, an image appears before me. It’s like gazing at clouds.
